Thalapathy Vijay’s Iftar Party Sparks Controversy: Fatwa Issued by Muslim Cleric

Popular Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Thalapathy Vijay is facing serious backlash after hosting an Iftar party that has drawn criticism from Islamic leaders and community groups. The event, held on March 7 in Chennai, has led to a fatwa being issued against the actor by a leading Islamic cleric in Uttar Pradesh.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilly, the National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat and Chief Mufti of Chashme Darul Ifta, issued the fatwa citing Vijay’s alleged disrespect towards Islamic values. According to the cleric, Vijay invited individuals described as “alcoholics and gamblers” to the religious gathering, a move he labeled both “illegal” and “sinful.”

Accusations of Political Exploitation

Maulana Razvi accused Vijay of attempting to exploit Muslim sentiments for political gain. He referenced the actor’s previous film roles, particularly in Beast, where he claims Muslims were portrayed in connection with terrorism.

“Vijay Thalapathy is now trying to gain political favor among Muslims, but his history is filled with anti-Muslim narratives. In Beast, Muslims were shown as monsters and terrorists,” said the Maulana.

He added that Muslims in Tamil Nadu should not support Vijay, attend his events, or include him in their religious gatherings. “This is not about fame or film. This is about the dignity of the Muslim community,” he stated.

Complaint Filed in Chennai

In Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath also raised concerns about the Iftar party. The organization filed a police complaint on March 11, claiming that the event included people who had no connection with Islamic practices. Held at the YMCA Grounds in Chennai, the event saw Vijay wearing a traditional skull cap, participating in evening prayers, and breaking his fast with attendees.

However, the group described the event as “disrespectful” and poorly managed. Speaking to the media, Syed Kous, the treasurer of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, said, “Muslims were insulted at the Iftar event organized by Vijay. Drunkards and rowdies were present, which made a mockery of a sacred occasion.”

He also called for legal action to prevent such incidents in the future. “We didn’t file the complaint for publicity. It is a serious matter for the Muslim community,” he added.

Political Ramifications

The fatwa and complaint come amid growing political interest in Vijay’s activities. His newly formed political outfit, TVK, is preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Earlier, reports surfaced that TVK had requested Y-category security for Vijay, allegedly fearing threats from the Muslim community due to the portrayals in his films.

Vijay’s party has denied these allegations, and so has the Tamil Nadu Muslim League, a TVK ally. They claimed the controversy is part of a smear campaign by the ruling DMK and its allies to damage Vijay’s growing popularity.

Vijay Remains Silent

As of now, Thalapathy Vijay has not responded publicly to the fatwa or the police complaint. Known for his massive fan base and social influence, the actor is yet to comment on the accusations of religious insensitivity or political opportunism.

Vijay was last seen in The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT), directed by Venkat Prabhu. While the film continues to make headlines, it’s his political foray and the current controversy that are keeping him in the spotlight.

With elections on the horizon and his political ambitions unfolding, how Vijay navigates this religious and political firestorm could have a significant impact on his public image—and his future in politics.
